All,
I've been using spackel to shape the mold for my cowling. It works
great. I started out using bondo, but the drywall spackel works much
better. It's easy to sand and re-do. I'm trying to get the cowling
done before my engine and prop arrive and the drywall makes it very
easy. thanks

Dave, you might try using 45 minute hot mud, it is drywall mud that sets up
quicker and you can build it up thicker if needed. Just be sure you seal it
prior to glassing. How are you getting the dimensions for the cowl if you
don't have the engine?

Ron,
The engine manufacturer, Hexadyne engineering, lent me a 'mock'
engine. It's basically the real engine with no internals--pistons,
crank etc. I mounted it up just as the real engine will be.
Visqueened it, duck tape, garbage bagged it. then foamed over it. My
biggest problem has been the artistic part....getting it even on
both sides etc. I need to get er done, because I will have the real
engine shortly (and prop). I should get my custom made composite
prop this week or next at the latest. I will run to wally world and
try some of that hot mud today. I would like to make sun n fun next
year--or if not oshkosh.

Prince aircraft company. He has been very helpful and will build you
really what you need. He does work for a lot of UAV companies and
specials like wind tunnel props etc.
www.princeaircraft.com/
He is making me a prop with the proper twist needed for a Q1 running
on a Hexadyne engine--3200 rpm and a short prop. Others would sell a
prop but I would never get the speed, even adding blades etc. I
should have it next week or so. It takes 30 days. Lonie Prince has
been very good to deal with. I will post after I receive the prop.
