QuickTalk 7 - SURVEY RESULTS

In our last QUICKTALK issue we attempted to assemble a consensus regarding performance of Quickies in the hands of builders, rather than that measured "by the brochure". Responses have been sparse so far (20 surveys) no doubt owing to all the hoopla surrounding jolly St. Nick's visit. But with the holidays over, it's time to share your info with us. We know of several complete projects (including a couple of dealers) who haven't responded yet.

First off, many builders have not spent the effort to nail down all their performance figures with even ballpark accuracy. It may be that knowledgeable builders need to suggest simple methods for measuring performance (for example, climb rate) that everyone may not know. There is a lot of required test flight time that could (and should) be spent getting some numbers, rather than just flying in circles. It would be a shame to consider a builder who knows every nut and bolt of his airplane, but doesn't have accurate knowledge of its abilities.

Both Quickie and Q2 flyers are consistently reporting high engine temperatures related to improper baffling. More than one builder speculated that the baffling drawings are inadequate. Another Quickie complaints of vibration have been traced to such causes as the propwash drumming on the canopy, prop imbalance, slack in the rudder cables, engine mount plates, etc.

We did not intend for our latest survey to consider the full range of flying characteristics and mechanical difficulties (although some people were good enough to do this), but simply to provide some basic statistics. We hope to provide a more complete survey of the former topics later this year. In any event, if you have not completed your survey from Issue #6, please do so. It will be useful for a more meaningful data table in the future.

As in any survey of builders, remember that results vary widely depending on construction accuracy and, in this case, pilot ability/confidence/anxiety to fly the aircraft and record realistic performance numbers. Take these numbers (which have been averaged from the responses) with a grain of salt and remember they are from a small response group.
