Issue Number 134
Checking in with HQ!
Here are a couple more letters that didn't make last issue.
Highlight of my flying in 2008 was surviving an engine failure over the sea between Spain and Ibiza last May, with 14.7 nautical miles to run - funny how these figures stick in your mind at moments like this. Not a Q-BIRD event.
This occurred in my 180 Lycoming powered Falco. The incident had my full attention for a bit. Passenger was also impressed. Later worked out that I might have stretched the glide to about 12 nms - still a long swim! We didn't get wet this time, but it was a close one.
Regards, Robin Nash Sussex, England
I live in a little town called Creswick in Victoria Australia. My Q1, I found in a shed of a nearby semi retired aircraft mechanic who said it had been there for 9 years with nothing being done to it. I knew nothing about these cute little planes until I got hold of a fellow in South Australia who has one with a Rotax 503 in his. At that stage I bought it.
That was last March. I have had some other projects on the go and wanted to finish them first, but I also wanted to be as prepared as I could before I started the rebuild of this project. About August I started sanding the entire aircraft to get the paint off. It is as hard as hell and took months to get it down to the fiberglass. In November I bought a brand new Rotax 503.
At present I have a friend building the engine mount and repairing the aileron torque tubes . I have stripped the firewall and am nearing fiber glassing the reinforcements for the new engine mount.
