Q1_Aircraft: Livermore Fly in was created by Ron
Hi All, I sure am glad I attended the fly-in yesterday, it was good to see
you all again. Good to see Phil up and around after his mishap. Sorry I did
not get to stay and enjoy the great food fest but needed to get to Tahoe so
I could at least get Sunday to work on mine.

As usual, I did learn plenty and everyone was so kind to open their cowl's
for us all to see. I took in excess of 50 picts. It was a real treat for me
to get to look under Paul Lipp's cowl and he was so kind as to explain
everything he has done. It was good to see someone depart from the norm for
something that works better. So many of us just use the same old parts and
systems; I really enjoy experimenting with all the new ideas and products.
Since I am in the middle of building the plenum on my 0200 it was just
perfect timing to see how Paul did his.

I already had the foam and dry wall mud in place on the cylinder area only,
I learned Paul had done the same, I just have to add the inserts to direct
the air where necessary on the top.

On top of the crankcase is the place for my Megalight coil so will direct
air to the coil in a similar fashion as Paul has.

The bottom plenums were the best part. I have been racking my pea brain on
how to do it.

I will proceed with the bottom plenum very similar to what Paul has. Just
think, I won't need all that exhaust pipe. And I just had it ceramic coated
for 100.00. I slightly changed the shape of my upper parts of the plenums
today to direct the air as Paul has done. I especially liked the way he has
done away with the scat tubing. Will do something similar even though I
bought my tubing and rubber baffles only about a month ago.

I red the article several months ago about the Fellow that did the
mustang 2 and how he directed his plenum air I have wanted to do a bottom
plenum and Paul is the first one I saw that has already done it. I never did
think it was good enough to just dump the air in the bottom of the cowl and
hope it exits through the bottom.

During the week I will have more time and will upload some of the pictures
from the flyin. I will be putting them on my web and the Q-list. I did get
the 4130 tube for the engine mount on the Q1 this week. Maybe I will cut it
to size and send it out to get welded which I can do during the week, I'm
not going to let the Q1 take up any weekend time, that is for the Q200 only
with momma first.

Hey Ron,
How about sharing some of thoes pictures for thoes of us (me) who
couldn't go. I'm interested in cowlings and plenum etc as I'm
ordering my engine next week for my Q. I'll be spendin lots of time
on the nose section. I turned the airplane around in my workshop so
it sits nose forward. I'm going to order my prop also probably by
the end of next week. It's a bit annoying that I'll probably be in
Brazil when my engine arrives next month--I'll be driving my wife
crazy to go drool on it for me till I get home.
Best Regards

Hi Dave, The plenum I am working on right now is for the Q200, I just
uploaded 3 new picts today to my web site and also the Quickie list under my
name in the photo's section. On the Q1, I am removing all the Rotax ducting
and will make a tight fit plenum with intake and exhaust ducting. I worked a
bit on the rotax motor mount also today. It is looking like I may be able to
fit the 503 within the existing cowl, I really don't care for the bumps on
some of the cowl's. It will be a real job to get the exhaust into the engine
cooling air exit but that is the way I would like to go to keep everything
streamlined. Keep us all posted on your progress.
