Hi, I have a 54' prop on my Q1. I have not flown it yet. My prop hub is raised
a little, my prop is about 9' from the ground. I also feel I need better landing
gear. I want to put 2 small wheels in the center about 3 feet apart with
adjustable load. I figure about 40% would work. I feel my extra engine weight
and my lack of experience combined equals a need for better landing gear. Any
comments on this landing gear...Marvin

Ryan (and others),

I notice you have a 52' prop. Is it mounted higher than the origiral
Q. What is your ground clearance, when you were a tail dragger? How
many inches does the canard flex when bouncing a landing--not that
anyone does that. Thanks
Dave R.

Marvin,
In the book Firewall Forward, 9' clearance is the minimum allowed. I wonder
what would happen if you used a Dragonfly mod and used the type II landing gear.

I like the idea of using the Dragonfly Mk2 mod for a taildragger. It
is a good design.

Marvin,

Three comments:

1. Why?

2. Why are you inventing 'solutions' to problems you do not know
exist? Surely the answer to lack of experience is to get more in
like aircraft rather than to further increase your risks by trying
out unknown landing gear configurations. If you do not have the
experience to fly the existing configuration - take it from me you
do not have the experience to be a test pilot for a complete
unknown.

3. Fix known problems with known fixes. Don't invent problems and
then concoct imagined fixes to other things. Imagine a certified
parallel - say I decide to restore a citabria, I haven't flown one
yet but think it might be a bit dodgy to land so I decide to make it
into a tricycle undercarriage aircraft - I am guessing 3 X 5'wheels
about 8 ft apart - does anyone one think that that this untried
change will compensate for the fact that I am uncurrent,
underconfident and ill prepared for the first flight. Better still,
any instructors out there prepared to sign me off as a reasonable
risk in this first of type test flight? The thinking here is
completely daft.

If it is any consolation you are far from the only one to fall into
this logical/ego hole. When built right, these aircraft are easy to
fly but they are not for the uncurrent, the ham fisted or the inept.
If the problem is experience, get more.

If you can go and get five or ten hours in a composite two seater
sailplane and five or so hours in a cub or a citabria ( i.e good
solo standard) That will knock any bouncing tendencies out of you.
It is also an excellent preparation for engine failures.

regards

John
