Ryan (and others),
I noticed on the quickiebuilders list you had a VW with a 52' prop.
Was that prop centerline higher than the onan center line? Did you
have the bigger wheels? I put my bird with the prop flange
perendicular to the earth, subtracted 9' and got 50' diameter. I'm
figuring I will need to use this as my max if I want to maintain the
9' clearance eaa recommends. I'm wondering is the 9'clearance a good
value for this airplane, I'm thinking bouncing in a landing etc?
How many horses do you figure you had with the VW running at 2300 RPM?
Was 120 your max speed with this set up?

Thanks

Dave,

I had the large 5' wheel and 12' tire mod. I did not have 9' of ground
clearance on the 52' prop. You can see that my VW engine fit in the
original Q1 cowl. A direct drive VW engine will run @ 3200 rpm all day
depending on prop pitch. A VW bug on the highway at 65 mph is turning
3250 rpm .

I saw 135 mph with my 1915cc engine as a tail dragger and 125 as a tri-
gear.

At 2300 rpm you must have a long prop or a lot of pitch.

Ryan,
How much ground clearance did you have? Did it work out
for you at the distance you chose? Was your prop on the

many inches does the canard flex when bouncing a landing--not that
anyone does that. Thanks

Dave,

Yes, I run a 52' prop. that is standard for a 4 cylinder VW engine. It
gets a lot of rock chips due to being about 6' from the ground. I put
the engine centerline the same location as the Onan. In fact the Q1
cowl would enclose the engine except for the barrels and heads as seen
in my photos.

I feel strongly that keeping the original gear is an accident waiting
to happen. I have bounced many times and had a hard landing skidding
sideways to the point of breaking off my wheel pants and still no
canard fractures or damage. The wide gear will pull hard if you hit
some water while fast taxi or landing, a low tire, doesn't take much.

Start getting some taildragger time, you will need it.

Ryan
