BEST WISHES FOR A MERRY CHRISTMAS

by Tom Moore

I hope everyone is staying warm for the holidays. Most of us have been enjoying some mild fall weather, but it looks like winter is getting settled in.

I hope the garage heaters have been pulled out and are getting regular use by now. Don't let the cold weather stop the progress you have made this summer. There are a lot of small epoxy projects that you can get done this time of the year. A large cardboard box and a light bulb will make a good overnight incubator to let your epoxy cure. If it were a non-structural piece, I would recommend using WEST SYSTEM 105 epoxy. This stuff will cure for sure overnight. You can get the epoxy with one of two hardeners. The 205 is the fast hardener that is ready in 4-5 hours and the 206 is the slower at 9-10 hours. The fast stuff is OK in the winter, but I found that during the hot summer it just didn't give me enough time before it started to set-up in the cup. I use the slower 206 all the time now. Get one of those inexpensive digital thermometers from Radio Shack. Keep the box at 70? overnight and you'll be set. If it doesn't get up to 70?, add another light bulb.

For you guys overseas, it's probably summertime and you're getting plenty of good warm weather to work on your project.

There are a few guys who are on the final stretch in getting their birds in the air. These guys will be keeping the garage warm well into the night trying to be ready for some taxi testing in the spring. I think we will see several first flights in 1999.

There will be another builder/pilot roster in the first (next) issue of 1999. Please check your roster and address in the JAN/FEB 1998 issue. If there are any changes that need to be made let me know when you renew. I'm getting a lot of good feedback from guys who have been able to use this to find other builders in their area.

Remember that all subscriptions to the newsletter run out with this issue. So it's time to renew.

I know I just got finished talking about winter but Sun 'N Fun is not far around the corner. It's scheduled for April 11-17. So start thinking about some nice Florida weather and being down there for the first big airshow of the year.

1998 OTTAWA RACE RESULTS

All of the numbers from this year's performance evaluation are listed in the following pages. Thanks again to Jon Finley and his crew for putting this together. The numbers are a little more interesting than last year since we now have two years worth to compare. (You will have to get last year's list out to do a comparison.) Some of the numbers went up and some of the numbers went down. At the start of the race the temperature was 80?F and 85? at the finish. The wind on the ground was 5-7 kts at 120?.

A new data column has been added this year. A couple of the guys watched the takeoff runs and measured the T/O distance required.

Keep building, it's worth it!
