Quickheads

Today I went back out to Skyhaven Airport in the hopes that I would find a break in the clouds and fly my beloved Piper Cub.  However, it was not to be.  When I arrived it looked like some nasty cells were passing overhead, and everyone was running around moving airplanes into or near shelter.

To make a long story short, I didn't get any flying done today, however I did meet one of the old codgers out at the field and we had a healthy "Hanger Flying" session.  I told him all about my vast experiences in the cub.  (All three hours of it.)  He in turn told me about his plane, an actual warbird sitting on the field.  I had seen his plane sitting out there every time I visited the field, but I didn't really pay much attention to it.  It looked like any other General Aviation low wing monoplane, to which (I wrongly assumed) some Air Force wanna'be had a appplied a USAF paint scheme.

Come to find out, this particular plane was an L-19 Piper Navion that had actually seen service during the Korean War as a troop and artillery scout, and big wig air limo.  Hmmm?  Go figure, shows how much I know.  The owner has flown it out to Oshkosh every year since he's owned it.  Well much to his surprise, I've never even been to Oshkosh.  (Some pilot I turned out to be!)

At any rate, I had a really nice time just sitting out under the eaves of the FBO building, watching the rain and listening to war stories.  I'll try to get some "actual" flying in later this week, but my "hanger flying" experience was fun too!
