Just an update to let everyone know that I'm still alive and still sanding away on my airplane. It's been working out really well just chipping away at the sanding a little bit each evening when I get home from work. I guess that's how airplanes get finished though. One small project at a time.
I sent an open letter to the Yahoo Q-list a few nights ago asking for advice about speeding up the sanding process. Sam Hoskins made it look easy on his blog, but after hearing his response it was clear that the job is a huge pain in the arse for every quickie builder!
I got a few idea from people who suggested that the paint might scrape off with a razor blade if it were the correct kind of paint. I might give that a try on my paint removal quest this evening. It doesn't really seem like scraping will work for me, since the paint still seems like it's in pretty good shape with very little flaking and/or bubbling. In fact, I'm thinking about having the paint analized to see exactly what Marcus used here. It's held up pretty darned well considering what this airframe has been through!
At any rate, while sanding last night I discovered the static port for all the steam guages was about halfway back on the right hand side of the tail cone. See I'm learning new things about my airplane every day. Plus I feel like all this sanding makes me feel more like I'm a member of the club or something. I'll finally be able to share stories about my aching wrists, feet, hands, and back with other composite builders who have suffered right along with me!
Now if only I could get that stupid Elton John melody out of my head, "I'm Still Sanding. . . Yeah. . . Yeah. . . Yeah!" It's so embarrasing!
