Piper Cub Hand Signals
The Quickie Hand Off!

I have been infatuated with the Quickie design ever since they were widely publicized in the early 80's. So when I came across an opportunity to purchase a virgin Q-2 off the quickiebuilders website I leapt at the chance. Being a man of action, I paid for the kit well before I thought about the logistics of actually picking it up. (Come to find out it wouldn't fit in the back of our VW Beetle. Hmmm?) Not to mention the fact that I had to confess to my new bride that I had made the purchase prior to consulting her.

Now about this same time, we were attempting to move from Boston, MA (where we could never afford a house, much less a garage) to North Eastern Pennsylvania (where we eventually bought two houses and a six car garage!) In Boston, we were living in a small apartment, and didn't have a dining room. When we moved to PA we suddenly had lots of room and a dining room. Now I was thinking, "Hey that would be a great place to put my Q!" Unfortunately, my wife thought it would make a better place for a dining room table (that we didn't own yet) all kinds of window treatments (that were clearly frivolous) and probably some throw pillows somewhere (what is it with women and throw pillows?)

At any rate, I thought this whole dining room table thing might be my in. My sister had also recently moved to Florida and had a perfectly good dining room set sitting in a storage unit in Connecticut. All I had to do was convince my wife that the closest rental van large enough to transport the dining room table was in Alabama!

Well she's not that dumb, but we compromised. I could pick up the kit in Alabama, if we then drove the van to CT to get the dining room set, and took her outlet shopping. (It almost wasn't worth it.) We flew down to Alabama, and rented a very large "mini"-van from Alamo.  Apparently, you can't rent a U-Haul type van one-way, and all the trucks required at least a four day minimum rental to cover the distance.

So to make a long story short we met Casey at his parent's home. He's a really great guy, and apparently a very good corporate jet jockey. He helped me load the kit into the van, and we just barely got the rear door closed. The tail cone was sticking all the way through and was almost touching the windshield, and the front seats were all the way forward to make more room!

I was pretty jazzed about the whole experience, but my wife thought that a fifteen hour cramped van ride equaled another trip shopping with her. (Apparently she's never been shopping with herself.)

Actually the trip was rather uneventful. We stopped at a nice hotel about 3 in the morning, and had a fairly relaxing ride back to PA the next day. When we got back I unloaded the kit into a storage unit where it sat 'til we purchased our house a couple months ago, I have been desperately trying to collect the remaining parts for the kit ever since.
